Comfort at Stacy's

It took a while to get there... commuting and all but I kid you not, this place is worth it. A glimpse of the place from downhill, you would say to yourself on a positive note, "This has got to be the place."  And it sure was the case with me, I then ended up smiling.

Arriving at the restaurant at a fairly-shy of lunchtime, the smell of some stewed-tomato pasta sauce (at least, that's what it smelled like to me) greeted us in this nicely, well-lit place.  The interior which is mostly pastel colors makes one feel cool and refreshed from the scorching heat of the outside and if I may say so, the air conditioning of Stacy's is very cool.

The brainchild of Angelique Abesamis-Castro and Aby Natividad-Nachura, Stacy's is a family-oriented, child-friendly restaurant that values their "little" patrons.  The conceptualization of this place really puts children into consideration with their indoor garden and comic books to keep the little ones happy and occupied.  So where did the name "Stacy's" come from?  The restaurant is named after Angelique's grandmother, Stacy.

After ordering, we were given a "Merry Mix" - a fun and cute appetizer they came up with, it consists of pretzels, marshmallows and popcorn to keep the child in you happy and if you do have kids with you, this would be a hit with them as well.

I am an avid fan of cream soups and Stacy's cream of wild mushroom is the best that I've had so far.  A hefty serving of rich cream soup with lots of chopped mushroom and a big chunk of wheat garlic bread, it's a sure winner. Hearty soup = soul food.  Need I say more?

What is soup without salad?  Stacy's offers the freshest greens you could find!  They have the Classic Chicken Ceasar Salad: grilled chicken breast, freshly sliced tomatoes, crunchy croutons and lots and lots of olives! (does it show I love olives?)  If the ceasar dressing is not enough, you could always ask for extra dressing from the courteous servers.  They also have their own Grilled Shrimp with Sweet Pomelo and mixed greens in Asian Dressing.  Interesting mix of fruit and veggies, a must try for salad lovers!

Stacy's Spaghetti and Meatballs may sound ordinary to you but is not just your ordinary pasta.  Rich stewed tomato puree and herbs makes up this classic Italian dish but what I really loved about their spaghetti are the "meaty" big chunks of meatballs, hardly a hint of any extenders.  I love it!

The Bacon and Mushroom carbonara is not to be snubbed.  The crispy bacon flavor adds body to the creamy taste of this dish, generous slices of mushroom and drizzled with parmesan cheese to further enhance the taste.

Now, comes the "hearty" meals.   Filipinos are generally tapa lovers, this place gives you "Stacy Jones", a good-sized serving of tender tapa, made from US Sirlion beef and lots of garlic, comes with eggs however way you want them.  Another Filipino all-time favorite is the "Rice 'N Shine", garlic longganisa without the skin makes eating more enjoyable.  If you're a fan of Vigan longganisa then this is perfect for you.

I personally love fish and Stacy's Herbed Cream Dory Fillet with Aioli Dip was a big hit with me.  Crispy crusted fillet and yet moist and tender inside, will definitely make you nod to this perfectly cooked fish.  Their aioli dip with the right tang is yummy too!  If you're into fowl, the Homebaked Chicken Parmesan will arrive at your table steaming from the oven, swimming in chunky tomato sauce and in a blanket of mozzarella and parmesan cheese.

Each time I hear the line "sarap to the bones", it automatically makes me think of chicken.  However, Stacy's Texas Barbeque Ribs changed that for me.  So tender, meat coming off the bones, you could actually eat it with just a spoon.  The savory sweet taste in each bite is their very own mix of barbeque sauce.  This, I highly recommend.

To finish off your gastronomic adventure,  head on to the "Life is a piece of cake" chiller.  With selections such as Bailey's Choco Cake, Banoffee Pie, Kahlua Choco Cake, Caramel Cheesecake and many more will surely satisfy your sweet tooth.   Coffee is also available to go with your choice of cake.

Ice creams for the kids and the kids at heart.

Head on down/up to Stacy's and enjoy good food, good ambiance, good people...

..one more thing, the music they play in this joint is great.  Nostalgic.  Conducive for eating.  Thanks to Mon for being our DJ for the day.

Thank You Global Pinoy

PRESS RELEASE

The Homecoming of Heroes

The modern day hero is nowhere near Andres Bonifacio or Jose Rizal. He does not carry a sword; nor does he wield a pen to rally a revolution. He is largely unknown and unacknowledged. But his sacrifice is no less valiant – after all he carries the dream of his family and a country’s economic security (17 billion USD in remittances and a 12% in GDP) on his shoulders.

So how do you say ‘thank you’ to a hero? How do you give back to the 11 million overseas Filipino workers who are sustaining our nation?

The Commission on Filipinos Overseas, Duty Free Philippines, Good News Pilipinas and Kraft Asia and Toblerone are stepping up to the challenge by announcing the opening of nominations for the first Thank You Global Pinoy Awards.

The Thank You Global Pinoy Awards is an initiative that seeks to search for the most outstanding global Filipino workers who deserve the gratitude not only of their loved ones; but also of the nation as a whole. It is primarily led by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO)—the government agency tasked to promote and uphold the interests of Filipino emigrants and permanent residents abroad and Toblerone as the key proponent of Thank You Day in 2007.

“We envision a community of well- respected and proudly competitive Filipinos overseas who contribute significantly to the productivity and well-being of the countries where they reside and work; while maintaining strong ties with the Philippines,” says Ms. Imelda Nicolas, CFO Chairperson. “And we believe that the Thank You Global Pinoy Awards, with its thrust to thank and give recognition to Global Pinoys, is a good way to achieve this.”

Duty Free Chief Operating Officer Mr. Lorenzo Formoso explains, “We have always been committed to satisfy the shopping needs of the international traveler in an efficient service environment showcasing the Filipino traits of warmth, hospitality and gratitude. We support the Thank You Global Pinoy Awards because it is a good channel to promote our intrinsic Filipino trait of showing appreciation.”

A purely below-the-line initiative, the Thank You Global Pinoy Awards will invite nominations of outstanding overseas Filipino workers who deserve to be thanked. Participants will have to log on to www.thankyouglobalpinoy.com to register, nominate and vote for the ultimate Global Pinoy. The top 10 stories will be awarded in January 2012.

A Heritage of Gratitude

The private sector has also shown great interest for the project with industry leaders Duty Free Philippines, Kraft Asia and the “thank you chocolate” Toblerone indicating their support.

In 2007, Toblerone challenged a Reader’s Digest poll that ranked Manila as one of the least courteous cities in the world, by staging the Philippines’ first ever “National Thank You Day” on October 20, 2007. Two years after, Toblerone elevated personal gratitude to a social exercise that involved the whole country with “The Thank You Day Awards.” Here, a grateful nation paid tribute to public Filipino figures Manny Pacquiao, Francis Magalona, Dolphy, Daniel Razon and Cory Aquino.

This time, together with the Thank You Global Pinoy Awards, the Swiss chocolate brand will be launching the Special Rewards Passport. The passport can be used to redeem gifts from partner establishments every time users do their shopping or go on vacation. Through this promo, Toblerone shows its appreciation to Global Pinoys by not only recognizing their efforts online, but also giving them a pasalubong that they can enjoy with their family.

“Four years ago, the brand sought to simultaneously revive the art of saying thank you and position Toblerone as synonymous with the value of gratitude,” shares Mr. Jaya Singh, Region Director, Middle East and Asia Pacific, Kraft Foods World Travel Retail.

“And the overwhelming support that we got – a congressional legislation declaring an official ‘National Thank You Day’ alongside massive media and private sector participation— proved that yes, the value of gratitude resounded with Filipinos. This year, we hope to rally that same groundswell of support, this time, for our Global Filipinos.”

Be part of a grateful nation. Join the rest of the country as it honors the ultimate global pinoy whom a grateful nation will say a resounding thank you to. For more information, visit www.thankyouglobalpinoy.com .

MIHCA Bags Back-to-Back Gold at Barista Championships; Students & Alumni Haul Medals at PCC

In a gallant display of effort and determination, MIHCA students and alumni bagged 6 medals in the recently concluded Philippine Culinary Cup (PCC) and Philippine Barista Cup (PBC) held at the SMX Convention Center last August 3 – 6.

On day one, John Millar pulled quite a coup by bagging the over-all championship for the non-professional category of the Barista Cup. His signature drink and impressive display of confidence wowed the judges as he brought MIHCA the distinction of being back-to-back champions in the category having lorded over the competition last year.

“I’m very happy that I was able to pull off this feat. It’s no easy task, but through hard work with my coach, we brought back the championship to MIHCA,” Millar said in reference to his mentor, Food and Beverage services instructor, Mr. Ernie Mesina.

A day later, it was Richard Abellanoza’s turn to strike gold at the US Poultry category with his masterful ballotine dish. The judges cannot help but give him the distinction, despite very stiff competition, due to the flawless execution of his menu.

Other competitors who claimed bronze medals at PCC were Marc Duane Villagracia for the Local Fish or Seafood category, Raymund Chua for the US Beef category, John Hendrix for the Australian Lamb category and Jorge Paolo Estember also for the US Lamb category.

“It was quite a rush watching the students compete at such a very aggressive level. All the competitors showed their willingness to win and we had to match, even surpass, that to perform well,” shared Chef Mia Yan who acted as coach.

Joining Chef Mia as coaches are Chef Mike Navarra, Chef Jomar Medrano and Chef Eric Gruba.

MIHCA has brought recognition to the country by participating in various competitions locally and abroad. Most recently, a group of MIHCA and Makati Shangri-La Chefs took home 7 medals out of 10 categories in the recently concluded International Culinary Cup at HOFEX 2011. This year, the instructors and students are also setting their sights on the upcoming National Food Showdown.

“We expect a tougher field there, so we’re doubling our efforts in preparation of the competitions. We look forward to the challenges,” according to Chef Mia.

RakenRol Jamming with Yeng

The 2nd solo concert of Pop Rock Princess of the Philippines” Yeng Constantino proved to be a major success last August 5th at the Aliw Theater despite a drizzly early evening.    With her base fans, the "YENGSTERS", which probably filled 1/3 of the venue,  celebrity friends (aside from the jammers) were also in full support.

4 years of a long wait for Yeng since her first major concert, Rock Enroll: Yeng Constantino's Rock to School Concert back in 2007, she proved to be very able to still hold down the Pop Rock Princess title in her 2nd major concert entitled: "RakenRol Jamming with Yeng Constantino".

Guest jammers in this concert were Tutti Caringal of 6 Cycle Mind, Raimund Marasigan of Sandwich, Gloc 9 who had the crowd energized with this duet "Wala Nang Natira" with Yeng and his solo "Upuan",  Lady Gaga's discovery/singing sensation, Maria Lourdes Aragon sang "Born This Way" and "Price Tag" a duet with Yeng.  Yeng's good friend Sam Milby is also part of the singing entourage wooing the ladies with his version of the song, "Lucky".
with Tutti Caringal
with Gloc9
What the concert-goers didn't expect to see were special guests such as Ivan Dorscher (the hunk from the music video "Jeepney Love Story") whom she re-enacted her video with on-stage and a show stopping performance by Yeng's avid supporter, Gary V, he had the crowd mesmerized with his moving long song medley, which includes his own rendition of "Where do I begin? (Love Story)" popularized by Andy Williams in 1970.   Mr.-Pure-Energy took some time in sharing with the crowd his admiration and deep support of Yeng's talent as a performer, songwriter and even as a director.

Along with JustinBreathes, Juan Manila and other friends, we all enjoyed good music that night and had a nice time and I can't wait for her next concert, hopefully, not 4 years from now.

A flair for your laundry by LG

 Press Release

Flair is a skill or instinctive ability to appreciate or make good use of something. You may not know it, but definitely you have a flair for something.

Most women have instinctive ability on dressing up, accentuating ordinary clothing for their fabulous curves, or making pricey dress dons even more.

But there’s a challenge. Frequently washing the clothes deteriorates the quality and color of fabric. If not washed and dried properly, especially during rainy season, clothes might emanate its pungent smell. Given this state, your touted flair might turn into a nightmare.

Realizing these concerns, LG Electronics, Asia No. 1 washing machine brand according to GfK, offers “Green Health+ Laundry Flair” that lets you care for your clothing flair with up to P12,000 savings and freebies when you get an LG top load or frontload washer. The offering runs until September 30, 2011 nationwide.

To help you decide in choosing the best washer to care for your flair and more, here are some useful tips:

No. 1 Smart saving. Choose washer with Inverter Direct Drive, whose motor is more durable, silent, and efficient than regular ones. The Inverter Direct Drive motor drives the drum without a pulley and a belt, so there are less noise, less vibrations, and less wearing parts. You get better durability and lower maintenance cost. The washer also must have function that automatically detects the needed amount of water after you load your laundry. This reduces power and water use by 25% and 45% respectively.

No. 2 Baby friendly. A push of a button is all you need to provide care not only for your clothes but also for your baby’s skin. Look for washer with Baby Care function. It minimizes detergent residues after a whole cycle by adding one more rinsing and keeps the optimal water temperature at last rinsing cycle, that is, 40 degrees Celsius to have detergent-free clothes. Detergent residues remaining in the clothes can cause skin irritation and allergies.

No. 3 Superior washing ability. Your washer must have enhanced washing performance, so that your cotton shirt and skirt are made clean without having to undergo rough washing stages. And, your colored clothing comes out more vivid after washing. There are washers so efficient that the laundry looks as if it has been hand washed.

No. 4 High on Hygiene. Your washer needs to be clean and germ-free. Look for washer with anti-bacterial filter and tub clean feature. The filter prevents the growth of bacteria. By enabling easier, more frequent clean, the tub-cleaning function allows you to clean the inner and outer tub with the push of a button. It helps prevent the growth of mildew – which can be an irritant to skin – while eliminating stubborn odours within the tub.

No. 5 Convincing convenience. Doing the laundry should not anymore be considered as a heavy chore. Dirty clothes are made clean with a simple push of a button. Moreover, look for washer with the right capacity, big door entrance, and easy to select temperature option for your various washing needs.
